As an HR and Tech community, we are always looking for ways to improve how we can respond and/or get ahead of our changing workplace. Our main goal is to continually recruit, retain and engage employees, and it is getting more challenging than ever!

The Canadian HR community isn’t sitting back. Together, we are pushing forward to innovate. We have gathered exciting Canadian HR leaders and innovators that are making waves at every stage of the employee lifecycle.

This is the 4th in a series and the venue will accommodate 300-350 people so be sure to invite your colleagues along!

Speaker Bios:

Michael Serbinis, Founder & CEO of League

Mike Serbinis is the CEO and Founder of League Inc., a next-generation health platform that is set to disrupt the world of insurance. Prior to League, Mike was the Founder and CEO of Kobo, a global leader in ebooks, and docSpace, a pioneer in cloud storage. Mike got his start building one of the first search engines, Zip2 at the start of the Internet boom. A rocket scientist who once developed jet propulsion systems at age 16, Mike is known as a serial entrepreneur who has built multiple transformative technology platforms across several industries, with over $1B of exits.


Cheryl Fullerton, EVP People & Communications, Corus Entertainment

Cheryl Fullerton is Executive Vice President, People and Communications at Corus Entertainment. Cheryl is accountable for the leading the creation of a high performance culture, and integrated, high impact people solutions to support the exceptional creativity and performance of the company’s people. Communications responsibilities include internal and external stakeholder communications strategies and execution for Corus’ roster of market-leading television networks, radio stations and associated assets. Cheryl also oversees Corus’ corporate social responsibility programs including the organization’s company-wide philanthropic initiative, Corus Feeds Kids.


Tania Oppedisano, National Director of HR, DIALOG

DIALOG has been named a Top 100 Employer in Canada for three straight years (2013-2015). And Tania has been an integral part of DIALOG’s success, as a top employer and the firm’s commitment to delivering excellence in design with exceptional client services in a fun, creative working environment.

Recently appointed as National Director of Human Resources, Tania plays a valuable part of DIALOG’s diverse culture, having worked in the Toronto Studio as both a Human Resources Manager and Studio Administrator previous to this role.

After starting in 2009, she immediately took on challenges and grew the Toronto studio from 37 to 130 in just two years with her keen ability to find the right hire to fit the studio culture. She brings big picture thinking, enthusiasm, and energy to her daily work and has provided leadership to DIALOG’s administrative team, while working with Studio Directors and Team Leaders across studios on human resources strategy and initiatives. Most recently, she lead the way remodeling the firms’ annual performance review of employees into a more progressive, ongoing development program focused on individual goal setting and professional development with the aim of enhancing performance, retention and making the firm stronger.

Tania is actively involved within the community, having been a key contributor to the company’s support of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), The United Way, and many other community and charity initiatives.

Tania completed her Executive Masters in Human Resources Management from York University, has a BA in Sociology, York University and certification in Human Resource Management from Humber College.


Kelly Davis, Senior Vice President, HR - Town Shoes Limited

Kelly is a Senior HR leader with generalist and specialist experience in both retail and hospitality industries, with 14 years of HR experience in retail (Town Shoes Limited, Hudson's Bay Company in Canada and Lord & Taylor in the U.S) and 2 years of HR experience in hospitality with Cara Operations (Milestones, Montana's, Kelsey's, Swiss Chalet and Harvey's).

Kelly has a Bachelor of Arts (major in Industrial Relations) from McGill University and CHRE and CHRL (former SHRP and CHRP) designations, as well as an H.R.C.C.C. (Human Resources and Compensation Committee Certified) designation from McMaster University.


Krista Jones, Managing Director, Work & Leanring - MaRS

Krista is the managing director of Work & Learning at MaRS. Krista has been a passionate innovator and builder of technology-based businesses for over 25 years, and has personally advised and been actively involved in over 200 startups.

For the past four years, Krista has been the driving force behind the creation of MaRS’ globally-leading Work & Learning sector. She works with entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, investors and technologists who are applying innovation and cutting-edge technologies to create solutions that are advancing the competitiveness of global workers and workplaces.

Krista has experience working in both large public companies and in startups. She is an engineer, entrepreneur, mentor and an expert at solving ambiguous problems. She has a unique combination of strategic, technical, operational and marketing expertise. She is known for her comprehensive knowledge of existing and emerging Information & Communications Technology (ICT) architectures, technologies and innovation practices.

Krista and her husband owned a children’s technology educational franchise that fostered early innovation and creativity in robotics, animation, digital art and video game design.


Wililam Greenhalgh, CEO, HRPA

Over 35 years of leadership experience in Marketing, International Operations and Finance in a variety of industries including electronics, petroleum, entertainment, publishing and business services. An extensive operational back ground as a senior executive (President, CEO) of multinational companies, expanded businesses into Europe, US, Asia and the Middle East in various industries.

Joined HRPA as CEO in early 2006; previous positions include President, Globe and Mail; President, Cinram International Inc; CEO, Thomson Newspapers - Western Canada; Chief Operating Officer of Shredit Int. Inc.; and various line and staff positions in General Management, Operations, Marketing and Finance with Nortel Networks. Expertise in JV's, acquisitions, mergers, sales, contract negotiations and strategy development and execution.

Chartered Director (C.Dir.) from The Directors College, Master’s degree from the London Business School, a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Southampton University, certificates from Harvard Business School's Senior Executive Programs in both Manufacturing and Marketing and a graduate of The Aspen Institute Executive Leadership Program.

Presently Corporate Secretary and Board member of the Human Resources Association; Board Member of the Human Resources Research Institute; government appointee as Vice Chair of the Board of the Ontario Public Accountants Council; member of the CD Howe HR Policy Council; member of the Champions Council of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association; Chair of the Canadian HR Committee at the International Standards Organization (ISO) and Chair of the multi country Working Group developing a global HR Competency Framework within ISO. Past member of the Boards of The Scarborough Hospital (including Chair of the Human Resources Committee and member of the Governance and Planning Committee), the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations; the North American Human Resources Associations, the World Federation of People Management Associations, the Toronto Symphony, the Commonwealth Games Club, H.O.P.E. and the Canadian Association for the Preservation of Chinese Cultural Treasures.

Extensive experience in creating and implementing effective business Strategies; complete revisions to governance processes; significant knowledge of government relations and processes.

Awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2012 for contribution to Palliative Care



Stephen Harrington – National Lead, Talent Strategy

Stephen Harrington is Deloitte’s National Lead – Talent Strategy, and has been a writer and speaker on the future of work and the workplace of the future since 2011. He suggests that workplace design can impact culture, if the employee experience is placed at the heart of design and given equal weight to other strategic objectives. Stephen is currently co-authoring a paper on the future of work with the HRPA, due to be released in fall 2017.

With 17 years’ experience in Consulting, Stephen leads transformations in talent strategy that enable our client’s people to feel personal purpose and impact, as the business drives improved results. Stephen’s work is focused on building and implementing talent strategies that deliver not only improved employee value proposition but also business benefits in the form of improved productivity and bottom line savings.

Stephen’s past work in transformation has often been for organizations pursuing ‘future of work’ transformations, fundamentally changing the way work is done requiring careful consideration of leadership alignment and cultural change. Stephen frequently speaks at events on topics involving the future of work and innovation and he has published several papers on the subject.


Joshua Karam, Co-Founder & CEO at Hyr

Joshua Karam is the co-founder and CEO of Hyr. A company that connects traditional businesses, starting with restaurants and bars, with independent labor to fill shifts, on-demand.

Josh has an extensive background as an executive Human Resources leader and entrepreneur. Prior to co-founding Hyr, Josh founded Synchronize HR a full-service human resources firm specializing in a better class of HR services - serving clients in key industries including aviation, retail and hospitality. Prior, he held various executive level roles with Starwood Hotels and Resort and Marriot International. Josh served as President of the Hospitality Human Resource Professionals Association (HHRPA), and hosted Toronto Speaks: Careers; a live and interactive talk show designed to elevate the careers of viewers by helping to enhance job search skills and overcome everyday struggles faced in the workplace.


Larissa K. Holmes, Head of People Operations, Borrowell

Larissa is the Head of People Operations at Borrowell, a leading Canadian fintech that helps Canadians make great decisions about credit.

With over 10 years of experience leading people and operations teams, Larissa is passionate about investing in people to achieve growth and great company culture.

Larissa recently published an article in The Globe and Mail, “Embracing Diversity is Uncomfortable – and That’s a Good Thing,” articulating her passion and commitment to diversity in the tech community.

Larissa has a wealth of professional experiences prior to joining the Borrowell team, ranging from leading the customer development function at a HR technology start-up, to working as a management consultant at Deloitte. Once upon a time, Larissa worked as a contemporary art curator in England.

She is based in Toronto with her wife and daughter.
