The global InsurTech startup ecosystem saw record-breaking level of investments of US$2.5 billion in Q3 2020. As the category begins to heat up both in Canada and globally, we are going to explore where the future innovation and investment opportunities are from investors’ perspectives.

We bring you a combination of institutional and corporate VCs who will share their views of the InsurTech space and where they believe opportunities lie in this sector.

Panelists:

• Jillian Williams - Investment Principal at Anthemis Group

Jillian is an Investment Principal at Anthemis, where she is responsible for sourcing, analyzing and executing deals and providing support for Anthemis’ portfolio companies. She brings an excitement for the financial services industry across all sectors and experience working with early stage founders. Jillian was also named one of Business Insider’s Rising Stars in New York Tech in 2018.

Prior to joining Anthemis, Jillian was part of the Investment Banking Division of Barclays in New York. She was focused on financial institutions and natural resources in the Equity Capital Markets division, helping a range of companies go public and raise capital in the public market. Jillian has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University. She lives in New York and is an avid runner.

• Jonathan Kalman - Founding Partner at Eos Venture Partners

Jonathan Kalman is a Founding General Partner with Eos Venture Partners, a Strategic InsurTech Venture Capital fund with offices in London and Philadelphia, and affiliates in Tel Aviv. He is a venture capitalist with over 20 years’ experience investing in the global insurance, payments and banking industries.

Previously, he was Managing Partner and CEO of Jaguar Capital Partners, a venture capital and growth equity investment firm with offices in Philadelphia and Hong Kong. Mr. Kalman was the founder, Chairman and CEO of Katalyst LLC and its affiliates including Katalyst Venture Partners LP and Katalyst Securities LLC. For the last decade Mr. Kalman has focused exclusively on the insurance industry in the US and abroad.

• Joshua Cohen - Principal at Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures

Josh Cohen is a founding member of Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures, joining the team in 2015. As a Principal, Josh is responsible for sourcing, due diligence, legal negotiation, and post-deal management. Prior to joining the fund, Josh focused on competitive intelligence and strategy within the insurance market at Liberty Mutual. Josh is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in Finance and Accounting.

• Rob Scully - Director at Manulife Capital Ventures

Rob leads Manulife Investment Management’s Venture Capital group, which invests in B2B SaaS startups across North America. Rob was previously with the IAF venture fund and has nearly 10 years in VC. In total, Rob has been involved in making and managing over 30 venture investments, with a focus on B2B SaaS. Notable investments include Top Hat, Fiix and Embroker. Prior to VC, Rob co-founded a mobile software startup (mobilSemantic) and headed BD for another mobile software startup (Polar); he also worked in enterprise applications (Oracle) and competitive intelligence (Ericsson). Rob is a University of Waterloo grad.
