Integration of New Technologies Into the Brazilian Electrical System: Chall...

In this presentation, Prof. Walmir Freitas will first introduce the main characteristics of the Brazilian electrical system, from centralized generation to residential customer. Then, he will present the official R&D program regulated by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL). In the final part of his speech, Prof. Walmir will discuss the main R&D projects under development by CPFL Energy, one of the largest distribution utility in Brazil. These projects comprise utility-scale solar generation, PV integration into low voltage networks, electric vehicles, smart meters and storage applications. The main objective is to provide the current scenario and future opportunities in Brazil.

Prof. Walmir Freitas, Ph.D, P.Eng, in the last 15 years, has participated as principal investigator in more than 30 R&D projects for Brazilian and Canadian utilities and government agencies, published more than 50 journal papers and supervised more than 30 Ph.D and M.Sc. students. He is an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery and the vice chair of the IEEE Working Group on Power Quality Data Analytics. His main research interests are distribution systems, distributed generation, power quality and protection.
