Emergence, in collaboration with BLG, invite you and representatives from your company to a workshop to learn about Using Patents as Business Tools .


Intellectual property (IP) is one of the most valuable assets for any organization, therefore having an effective IP strategy in place is essential. This session will examine techniques to use patents as business tools to create value for companies while avoiding common pitfalls. Some of the topics addressed in the workshop will include:

  • Patents vs. other forms of protection (risks vs. benefits)

  • Patentability vs. Freedom–to–Operate

  • Conducting searches to assess market/patent position before investing too much

  • Use of confidentiality agreements/non-disclosure agreements

  • Inventorship vs. Ownership

  • IP protections in company agreements

  • Preparing for and conducting IP due diligence

  • Record keeping

  • Costs and filing strategies

  • Assignments vs Licenses

  • Valuation

About the Facilitator:

Jennifer Raoul is a partner and patent agent in the Ottawa office of BLG. Jennifer conducted an Industrial Research Rotation at a global pharmaceutical company and thus has both academic and industry experience. Jennifer now specializes in patent procurement and related business and legal strategies in the life sciences field. Jennifer works with clients in the private and public sectors, including universities and life sciences companies of all sizes, from start-ups to global organizations.
