Intelligent Lives

by award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib

INTELLIGENT LIVES stars three pioneering young American adults with intellectual disabilities—Micah, Naieer and Naomie—who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce.

Academy Award-winning actor and narrator Chris Cooper contextualizes the lives of these central characters through the emotional personal story of his son Jesse, as the film unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelligence testing in the United States.

INTELLIGENT LIVES challenges what it means to be intelligent, and points to a future in which people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment, and intimate relationships.

JANICE FIALKA and RICHARD FELDMAN, nationally recognized parents, authors and advocates from Detroit, Michigan and their son, MICAH FIALKA-FELDMAN, featured in the film, will facilitate an engaging conversation around these themes.

Micah, one of the stars of the film, is a national change maker, self-advocate and writer. Through the film and the discussion, you will learn more about what it takes for Micah and his community to create an inclusive, meaningful life.

Book signing and sales of publications of Janice Fialka will be available. Check out Janice's new book: What Matters: Reflections on Disability,Community and Love

Listen to Janice's interview on NPR-Michigan Radio (91.7)

"Take into your heart the message embodied in Janice's book and everything else about inclusive education will naturally fall into place. If you read only one book this year, make it this one. It’s the real deal."

-Cheryl M. Jorgensen, Inclusive Education Consultant
