Description

Please note: This event is open to the public. The registration deadline is September 11, 2019. Advance registration is required.

Whether your job affords you the opportunity to work with newcomers to Canada, or you are simply interested in interacting effectively with people from other cultures, this session is for you.

Facilitator Michele Manocchi* of the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre will equip participants with concrete skills for cross-cultural awareness and successful intercultural communication through case studies, activities and discussion.

The session will explore:

  • intercultural competency and the definition of culture

  • unconscious biases and situational privileges

  • how our cultural lens impacts cross-cultural dialogue

  • strategies for increased engagement and positive outcomes in the midst of culturally diverse approaches.

*Michele Manocchi is Adjunct Research Professor at Western University’s Department of Psychology as well as a member of the Western Centre for Research on Migration and Ethnic Relations. He also works as an Intercultural Education Specialist at the Cross Cultural Learner Centre in London, ON, where he develops, promotes and provides intercultural competency training for institutions, organizations and companies across Canada.

Michele arrived in Canada from Italy in 2013. He is passionate about social justice and inclusion. He is committed to using his educational background and expertise, including a Ph.D. in Comparative Social Research, to support communities in addressing complex social issues. He strives to continuously reflect on his privileges and to use them to help remove the roots of systemic discriminations that create barriers to accessing services and opportunities and that undermine fundamental values such as truth, trust and integrity.
