Description

8th Edition:

The Right to Education for All: Inclusive education and children's rights

The International Summer Course on the Rights of the Child is an expert forum for exchange and dialogue for professionals working with children. It contributes qualitatively to the promotion of the rights of the child, under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as fundamental rights, and to the development of the best professional practices. At the same time, it aims to encourage decision-makers to develop public policies that protect the best interests of the child, with the goal of improving the quality of our children's education in New Brunswick, throughout Canada, and around the world. The 2019 Summer School will take a reflective look at important issues concerning the education of late primary and secondary school-aged children, and bring forward the results of last year’s session in relation to early childhood.

Education is first and foremost a right that all governments are obligated to respect and implement. Moreover, the right to education is an engine of human development in line with the 2030 Education Agenda in Goal 4 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, the education of children is an interdependent right to fulfill all other rights of the child. Education must aim for the full development of the child, as well as inculcate respect for human rights, identity and language. In line with the principle of non-discrimination and equal opportunities, education must be equitable, accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic status, gender or disability, or other prohibited ground of discrimination.
