International Talk Series at VanDusen Botanical Garden

Saturday May 19, 6:30pm - 9:00pm

VanDusen Botanical Garden at 5151 Oak Street

BMO Great Hall

Join Crafted Vancouver as we present an evening of three talks and presentations focusing on the career paths of our three fascinating guests joining us from the UK; Textile Artist and Milliner Bridget Bailey, Silversmith Bryony Knox and Contemporary Quilt Maker Sinead Black

Flight Path by Bridget Bailey

6:30pm - 7:15pm

UK textile artist and milliner Bridget Bailey is known for her intriguing ideas, observations and very particular skills with materials. Over a career spanning almost 4 decades, Bridget has created pleated scarves for Liberty, designed and made hats for many clients including Jean Muir and Saks Fifth Avenue, and brought her Pea Pod jewellery to the V&A. From textile taxidermy, to entomological millinery, Bridget Bailey’s artworks explore the natural world, combining intriguing ideas and observations with her very particular making skills.

Trained in textiles at Farnham, and with a background in millinery, Bridget now works as an artist, making one-off pieces for exhibitions and as commissions. She has also developed an international reputation as a teacher over the last 10 years.

Bridget tells her story showing images of her work past and present, sharing some details about her career, and about becoming an artist working in textiles and millinery.

Sinead Black

7:30pm - 8:15pm

With a background of many years in commercial design and teaching at The Glasgow School of Art and University of Ulster, Bricolage represents an exciting creative direction for its founder Sinead Black: reviving the lost tradition of hand quilting, producing contemporary heirloom quilts which are uniquely designed, beautiful and practical.

It draws on the maker’s design expertise, influences of landscape, nature, botanical dyes and a strong understanding of colour and graphic pattern, thus producing a distinctive modern design identity.

It continues a family tradition in sewing and embroidery as all items are handquilted, which effectively show the patient hand of the maker.

Bryony Knox

8:15pm - 9:00pm

Bryony designs sculptures and silverware with a twist, creating pieces which, on closer inspection or handling reveal an additional function. Interaction and discovery of unexpected movement, or flashes of colour and texture, inspire Bryony, bringing to life the wonderful characters and creatures of myth and fable.

Booking necessary, $20 includes light refreshments
