Event Details

1-Strategies in simultaneous interpretation (SI) (3.5 hours)

Strategies in SI are a number of learned and well-established ways to solve difficulties arising in SI. The main difference between expert interpreters and students/beginners is that experts have developed schemata to handle a variety of situations in SI.  Such schemata have to be taught and internalized until they become almost automatic.

The 3.5-hour lecture introduces main strategies and their use for beginners. More experienced interpreters also need to take a periodic inventory of their strategies to achieve better automation, so the lecture is not limited to beginners.

It covers -among others- the following topics: types of difficulties in SI, the role of strategies and their goals, generic strategies and more specific techniques (e.g. saucissonnage vs segmentation vs literal translation), difference in use of strategies in various type of SI (e.g. court vs conference setting), types of probability prediction in SI, strategies and information management, the role of strategies in the overall process of communication.

The lecture is followed by an exercise in selecting appropriate strategies depending on given initial conditions.

2-Memory-Training for Interpreters (all types) (1.5 hours)

Memory training has always been the cornerstone of interpreter education, especially in the consecutive mode. The lecture covers what memory is, type of memory, specific use of memory by interpreters in consecutive and simultaneous mode, and ways to use the knowledge in daily work. The lecture is followed by several practical exercises and demonstrations.

3-Simultaneous Interpretation Equipment (1.5 hours)

This 1,5-hour lecture illustrates basic types of simultaneous interpretation equipment and advanced skills needed to use it in the professional booth or during chuchotage. Such topics as recent technological developments (remote interpretation, BYOD, “external cable”) are covered. Special attention is paid to health issues and hearing protection in remote interpretation.

The second part covers basic rules of professional conduct, AIIC Ethics code, booth etiquette.

A few practical ethics scenarios will be given to participants to analyze and identify best strategies to resolve potential issues.

4-Tips & Tricks of Working on the Market (1.5 hours)

In the presentation, the following topics will be covered: the psychology of freelancing, contract negotiation, assignment preparation, and career "midlife crisis" management.

Freelancers in different professions face a number of unique challenges. The relative social isolation and lack of group support may be difficult to manage. We will discuss the nature of the problem and possible solutions for freelance interpreters and translators. Once embarking on the career, freelancers' interpretation and translation skills are only one facet of their “professional persona.”

The way professionals interact with others critically defines their value and career opportunities, and we will discuss ways to maintain our professional integrity while recognizing perspectives of other market players. When drafting contracts, there are basic things that interpreters and translators need to know.

Sharing rich experience as an AIIC and TAALS member, the speaker will discuss vital elements such as assignment preparation and work etiquette for the delivery of outstanding language services.

Finally, yet importantly, the career path of a freelancer is different from a traditional one where a corporate ladder is available. We will discuss what it means to "advance in one's career" in our line of work and ways to manage career midlife crisis.

A panel discussion by two conference interpreters (USA based and Canada based) will then provide more practical tips and recommendations for beginner interpreters.

Cyril Flerov is a professionally trained San Francisco based Russian conference interpreter (Russian A, English B) educated both in Russia and in the Unites States. He has over 20 years of experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and worked freelance at events organized by major US, Russian, UK and international clients. A member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and of The American Association of Language Specialists (TAALS), he has experience teaching simultaneous and consecutive interpretation both in Russia and in the United States, including the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (formerly the Monterey Institute of International Studies) in Monterey, California. His speaking engagements about interpretation include  Chicago Area Translators and Interpreters Association  (CHICATA), NASA, California Federation of Interpreters (CFI), MIIS, The Linguist Magazine, and others. He authored a variety of publications for AIIC, Yelabuga Institute of Kazan Federal University (in Russian), and for various online groups including “Teaching Simultaneous Interpretation” on LinkedIn.
