Event description

DATE: September 9 & 10, 2017 (9:00AM - 5PM, Daily)

WHERE: Elora Centre for the Arts - 75 Melville St, Elora, ON N0B 1S0

VENUE: TBD (will email participants shortly with address)

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to advanced

I'm so excited to officially launch "Into The Shadows" - a two day workshop designed to delve deep into the art of creating portraits with equal attention on both shadow and light, emotional appeal, depth and soul.

In the past I've taught about lighting and done many portrait demonstrations, but I have never had the time to really dig deep and explain the intricacies of my own personal approach, my thought process when lighting, how I create atmosphere/depth and my various post processing techniques. In this workshop I will show participants how I accomplish my personal style and help them to apply what they have learned to their own work.

Here are some of the key topics we will cover over the two days:

• how to use shadow to your advantage in portraiture

• how to create or enhance mood/atmosphere

• when to light along side existing light or create your own light

• recognizing the right light for the right subject

• what to look for in a location - light quality/direction, depth, relevance to subject

• one light and multiple light approaches

• how to create soft yet dramatic light

• how various focal lengths and apertures effect the feel of a portrait

• how to achieve a cinematic look in your portraits

• post processing techniques that bring atmosphere and colour unity to your portraits

We will go over key points in a classroom setting before heading out to a pre-determined location with our models to learn by "doing". I'll demonstrate various techniques on location before assisting participants as they shoot. I'll be there to guide you and answer any questions you have as you put what you have learned into practice.

Registration and Cost:

Cost for the two-day workshop : $550 + HST and Event Bright fees

To sign up: registration done online via Eventbrite only. Please follow the above links and register directly on the Eventbrite page; spots must be paid in full online to be considered registered.

Please note that workshop spots are non-refundable, but are transferable if you cannot attend (which means if you're able to find someone to take your spot, this is acceptable).

What do I need to bring?

A digital slr camera with manual exposure capabilities is highly recommended! Please bring any lenses you own so that you have some flexibility in focal lengths and can experiment a little.

This workshop is about on-location portraiture which will most often include lighting. I understand that many people like to use their own lighting equipment and I welcome that, however, I will have plenty of lighting equipment on hand for you to use. This includes reflectors, off-camera flash systems, studio lights and light stands. Don't worry if you are not a lighting expert, this will be a fun and friendly learning environment!

To take part in the editing portion on day two, I recommend that you have a laptop with adobe photoshop loaded as well as the raw file converter needed to open your raw files. It's no problem if you use Lightroom to do your initial edits and conversion from raw format, but I still recommend having photoshop to take part in more advanced editing techniques. There will be a live editing demo, so if you don't have a laptop or photoshop you will still be able to learn by watching the demo.

I look forward to seeing you there and sharing my passion with you!
