Event description


Wild Women Empowered Intro to Backcountry Camping is open to women who want to try backcountry camping and those who are seasoned vets and want to share their knowledge and experience with other women.

This trip will be at Fortress Lake Trail in Jasper National Park.

Registration includes: two-nights camping fees, learning about the safety and tips on how to have an enjoyable backcountry experience, CPR and First-Aid certified group leader Katie Robertson.

Spaces are limited. Registration closes April 30.


Friday June 22, 2018

12:00 pm: Meet at Sunwapta Falls Trailhead (Carpooling available from Edmonton)

Briefing. Gear Check. Snack time.

12:30 pm: Hike 7.8 km to Big Bend Campsite

4:30 pm: Set up the campsite. Relax. Explore. Fire (if permitted).

Saturday June 23, 2018

9:30 am : Hike 6.8 km to Athabasca Crossing (light pack only)

12:00 pm: Lunch at Athabasca Crossing. Relax. Explore.

1:00 pm: Hike 6.8 km to Big Bend Campsite

4:30 pm: Relax. Explore. Fire (if permitted)

9:30 am: Hike 7.8 km to Sunwapta Falls Trailhead

12:00 pm: Stop for lunch

2:30 pm: Arrive at Sunwapta Falls Trailhead

Note: Hiking will be relatively easy-lightly challenging depending on your fitness level and weight of pack. We will travel as a group so travel times may vary depending on how fast/slow we all want to go. I've based the time estimates on an avg pace of 18 min/km with heavy packs and 15 min/km with light packs. Elevations will also affect timings.

What You'll Need

1. Tent

2. Sleeping Bag (up to -10 recommended)

3. Clothes (bring layers) - might include: base layer, mid layer, raincoat/windbreaker, fleece shirt, pants, shorts, t-shirt, wool socks, toque, sunhat, mitts, etc.

4. Sleeping Mat

5. Snacks and Food (dehydrated recommended)

6. Water bottle or bladder

7. Water tablets or filtration pump

8. Sunscreen and Bugspray

9. Toiletries

10. Headlamp or flashlight

11. Matches/lighter

12. Hiking boots or really good trail shoes (preferably over the ankle)


1. Bear spray/bell/banger

2. Jet Boil or another cooking instrument

3. Buff

4. dry bag

5. baby wipes

6. knife (pocket or utility)

7. Small first aid kit (there will be one on the trip but for your ongoing adventures)

8. Small cord (10-20 ft in length)

9. ear plugs

10. Pack towel

11. Trekking poles

Most backcountry lists are a little over the top (it depends how long you're going for and what your "creature comforts" are). If you're used to the "luxuries" of car camping - you'll want to consider how much weight you'll willing to carry for 3-4 hours at one time.
