Fitzmaurice Voicework® is a “comprehensive” somatic approach to voice that “explores the dynamics between body, breath, voice, the imagination, language, and presence. Integrating physical experience and mental focus, the work develops vibrant voices that communicate intention and feeling without excess effort."

Fitzmaurice Voicework® was created as a way to teach actors an effective vocal technique, but it has evolved to help people in a wide variety of professions. The work is for anyone who wants to expand & develop their understanding of body breath and voice for expression and communication.

Fitzmaurice Voicework™ has benefited actors, singers, directors, dancers, movement specialists, therapists, healers, professors, radio and TV announcers/ hosts, business professionals, medical professionals, and many additional (creative) community members and professionals.

Fitzmaurice Voicework™ is comprised of two phases: Destructuring and Restructuring. The first phase promotes body awareness, free spontaneous breathing & expressivity, and presence. The second phase supports “intentional” integrated breathing that supports vocal expression and communication.

No experience necessary. Everyone welcome!

What you will need to be comfortable

• Wear loose clothing that does not bind in the belly nor impede movement at your shoulders and hips, et cetera. (Because your temperature might fluctuate you may want to dress in layers).

• Bring a mat, a pillow, and blanket(s). Think comfort!

• Bring water/liquids to stay hydrated throughout the day: there is a kettle to make tea and a fridge to keep your lunch in.

About the Instructor:

Traci Foster is a multidisciplinary performance artist, instructor, and director, who was Canada’s first certified Fitzmaurice Voicework™ instructor and is one of Canada’s lead certified (2006) practitioner of the work. She explores and develops her work through somatic arts with a focus on body, breath and voice. Traci is the recent and humbled recipient of the 2015 YWCA’s Woman of Distinction Jacqui Shumiatcher Arts Award.

Traci maintains a private practice of teaching/coaching and conducts workshops in creative development through voice work, acting, and clown in Regina, Vancouver, and Los Angeles. She joined the faculty at the YBCS in 2003 and cherishes the opportunity to work with the students, artists and staff involved.
