David will cover the essentials of seed production to ensure you are growing the best-quality seed possible:
- Self- and Cross-Pollinating Crops
- Isolation Distances and Population Sizes
- Seed Crop Management
- Harvesting and Cleaning Techniques
- Packing and Selling Seed
As part of the workshop we will have the chance to process some golden beet seed at Local Harvest Farm using several different techniques. Local Harvest has several hundred pounds of beet seed to process!
David will also talk about the BC Eco Seed Co-op which is working with BC seed growers to increase the quantity and quality of organic seed being grown in BC while providing education and training opportunities for its members.
David Catzel has almost 20 years of growing experience using organic and ecological principals from urban to rural settings. He has had the opportunity to experiment with seed growing/breeding while working with Glorious Organics Co-op over the last 11 years. Prior to that he worked with the Environmental Youth Alliance during the creation of Urban Seeds, then an inner-city seed project focusing on both vegetable and herb seeds, as well as seeds for native plants. David has taught basic seed-saving workshops for the City and Township of Langley as well as at the BC Seed Gathering in 2014.
