Event Details

Metcalf will host two separate workshops that will introduce concepts of innovation and adaptive change for arts organizations, provide an opportunity for initial exploration of adaptive work, and stimulate feedback on the usefulness of these appraoches for the needs of the participants and the sector as a whole. The sessions will also provide an overview of the work that EmcArts, a leading provider of innvoation services to the arts and culture sector across the United States, is undertaking in a variety of American communities. For an introduction to the concepts of EmcArts and adaptive change, click here.

The day has been designed with two independent sessions:
  •   an introductory session in the morning with a presentation of the ideas and a question and answer period; and
  •   a hands-on workshop in the afternoon that engages teams from a very limited number of performing arts organizations around the adaptive challenges unique to their own company.

Please note that registration for each of these sessions will be handled separately.

Afternoon Session
This afternoon workshop will build on the ideas an approaches introduced in the morning session. We anticipate working hands-on with teams from a small number of companies, engaging participants as much as possible around their own adaptive challenges, rather than a theoretical overview of change. The participants will focus, from the perspective of their individual organizations, on the following aspects of innovation and adaptive change:

  •   questioning existing organizational assumptions and identifying evidence that contradicts those assumptions;
  •   developing new hypotheses about future success or propositions on which new strategies might be built; and
  •   describing the organization's adaptive challenges, using criteria to identify high-priority challenges, and determining the most important challenge on which to focus.

Richard Evans, President of EmcArts, will also discuss factors in the design of successful innovation projects and share the innovation journey of an organization from one of EmcArts' programs.

Registration will be limited to a small number of companies, each of whom must attend with a three-person team to take part in the workshop. The teams should be comprised of
  • one artistic leader from the company,
  • one administrative leader from the company, and
  • one volunteer (or Board) representative from the company.
If this type of team does not accurately reflect your organization, please contact Michael Jones, Performing Arts Program Director at the Metcalf Foundation, to discuss appropriate alternatives. While participants in this workshop are encouraged to attend the morning session on February 5 as well, all three members of the innovation team will not be required to attend both morning and afternoon sessions.

A complete registration will require the names and contact information of all three people from your company who have committed to attending the session.

To register for the afternoon session, complete the registration information on this page.

Special Note: Arts service organizations will not be permitted to register for the afternoon session until space has been made available for all other interested performing arts companies. Arts service organizations are encouraged to attend the morning session, and they are also encouraged to attend the workshop being offered for them by Richard Evans on the morning of February 6 through the ASO Learning Network.
