Workshop Outline

This two part workshop series will introduce students to the basic workflow and tools in Adobe After Effects. This powerful animation program serves many purposes: from creating lower thirds, compositing green screen footage to building motion graphics and animations. A basic understanding of AE is an important skillset for any independent filmmaker, adding production value and creativity to each project.

Workshop structure:

Over two 3 hour sessions, students will:

  • Tour the software interface and learn about the essential tools

  • Learn basic animation principles

  • Work in tandem with Photoshop to create their own artwork to use

  • Integrate sound elements into their workflow

  • Create a short (30 second) animation

Day 1 – Introduction to AE:

  • View examples of AE produced animation

  • Tour the interface

  • Learn about the essential tools

  • Explore basic animation principles

  • Discuss sound design theory

  • Learn about integration of Photoshop and AE to create artwork

  • Discuss storyboarding

Day 2 – Create an Animation:

  • Create simple animation assets in Photoshop

  • Build a short, 30 second, animation

  • Incorporate sound elements into project

  • Learn how to export projects for various workflows

Technical requirements:

Ideally each student will bring their own laptop, but if that proves to be a barrier for anyone, sharing will be encouraged. Each student with a laptop should arrive at the workshop with either a licensed version or a trial version of both After Effects and Photoshop installed on their computer. We will not have time to deal with installation during the workshop so it is very important they arrive prepared.
