This class will teach fundamantals of CNC machining, including how to use CAM (Computer aided manufacturing) programs to generate G-code to use on our CNC machines. Students will also learn how to load, set up and run programs on the CNC machines. Class is open to members and associates who have taken the milling course and/or have relevent shop experience.
The class is one FULL day, there will be classroom/lecture learning and hands-on in the shop.
Students must have taken the milling machine course and/or be checked out to use it, and students must already know the basics of CAD/image manipulation, or be able to find or have made suitable files. [Sketchup is not a suitable CAD program, as it does not transfer to CAM (computer aided manufacturing) programs.] For 2D drawings vector graphics such as .dxf, .pdf (scalable), or .dwg files work well. For 3D, solid models are required, and Sketchup does not output the right format.
Laptops and protective eyewear required, and hearing protection is advised. USB keys are advised.
Students will be authorized to use both the CNC router and CNC mill after completing class. Students will be able to create their own programs to cut parts on both mill and router. During the class, each participant will cut a "license plate" to show their particpation, similarly to the laser class graduates.
