Event description

Description

Learn how you can grow your own vegetables year round.

This interactive, hands-on workshop will teach you how to construct a self watering indoor planter. Typically called wicking beds, these soil based planters only require watering once every 2-3 weeks and are compact, affordable and extremely simple to build and maintain. We'll construct a wicking bed together and you'll learn how to use indoor grow lighting to get the most efficient plant growth in winter.

In addition, you'll learn how easy it is to grow microgreens and herbs in your kitchen using nothing more than a tray and grow light installed underneath your shelf or countertop. You'll plant a microgreen tray to take home and learn how to get a head start on your summer garden by growing your seedlings indoors. ** Please note : if you do not want to take a planted microgreen tray home, you will be refunded $10.

We'll dedicate any left over time towards an introduction to "flood and drain" hydroponic / aquaponics system construction (stay tuned for an upcoming workshop dedicated entirely to hydroponic and aquaponic system construction).

Workshop participants will receive 10% off any future product or service from Sea to Sky Aquaponics.

This workshop will be taught by Jonathan Luckhurst, owner of Sea to Sky Aquaponics. Jonathan received his BSc in Cell Biology-Genetics from the University of British Columbia and was instrumental in the construction of Nutraponics Canada’s Demonstration Facility — Canada’s largest aquaponics facility to date. He is a graduate of The Aquaponic Farming Course (Denver, Colorado). He owns and operates Sea to Sky Aquaponics - a design minded company that builds anything to do with fish & plants. He builds aquaponic systems, green walls (living walls and moss walls), microgreen systems, self watering gardens and educational systems for schools. He is also a visual artist and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Edmonton Arts Council.
