Description

A 10 class introductory course to Kendo, the Japanese way of the sword, for students ages 8–15. From this course, you'll learn:

  • The basics of kendo etiquette
  • The origins of kendo and kendo history
  • How to hold a shinai (a bamboo sword)
  • How to move your feet, kendo style
  • How to strike a blow with your shinai

This course will be taught by world-class kendo instructors and practicitioners. Our instructors have been members of Canada's national kendo team and have competed and trained with some of the very best kendo practitioners in the world. This course will be taught at the Steveston Martial Arts Centre adjacent to the Steveston Community Centre.

Course cost is $110 which include the cost of a bamboo sword (shinai). Those who succesfully graduate from this class with an attendance rate of 8/10 classes, will be invited to join the club as full time members in September. The membership cost for September to December will be $25.


Class held on Monday and Fridays on the following dates:

  • July 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30

  • Aug 3, 10, 13

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?

For this class, students must be a minimum of 8 years of age and no older than 15 years of age.

What do I wear to kendo class?

Wear something comfortable like short or track pants. We don't recommend jeans. Do not wear jewellery or watches.
