Intro to Ruby on Rails and the SCI&U Open Source Project (ONLINE)
About this event
The following online workshop focuses on users with a Mac or Linux/Unix operating system. We hope to support Windows users in the next iteration!!
SCI&U is an online health coaching and self-management program that is powered, in large part, through the magic of Ruby on Rails (https://rubyonrails.org/).
In this workshop you'll learn how to install Ruby on Rails on your computer at home and how to use it to create a very simple database of health resources like that on the SCI&U website. You'll leave familiar with the Model, View, Controller (MVC) framework for web programming and SCI&U's Open Source codebase (https://github.com/SCIandU/sci-and-u-rails).
The workshop will take place on two days:
October 22, between noon and 2 EST
October 23, from noon and 4 pm EST
Day one of the workshop will involve meeting 1-on-1 (or in pairs) with an instructor to install tools required for Ruby programming (e.g. Ruby, Rails, SQLite and Sublime Text). Day two will see us all meet in a group to get a very basic website up off the ground and running on your home computer.
