Event description
In the process of making theater, the physical and emotional safety of the artists is crucial - but how do you create a safe space?

About this Event

Creating theatre means exploring themes and truths, and sometimes difficult subjects and situations. How do you approach a potentially triggering scene safely? What are some practical ways you can create a safe space for your actors and artistic team?

This workshop will give you the knowledge to feel and create a safe space in any arts environment. We will discuss the pillars on intimacy direction, creating your personal safe space, and creating a safe relationship with fellow scene partners.

All experience levels welcome.

What to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing: We will be moving around the space
  • Appropriate footwear: Something that will stay on your feet
  • Water bottle
  • Notebook and writing utensil

About the facilitator

Alexandra is a born and raised Fort McMurrayite, and is no stranger to the stage. She first appeared on Keyano Theatre Main Stage as the Dutch Girl in Miracle on 34 th Street when she was 10 years old. She has since performed in over 20 plays and Musicals including Roxie Hart in Chicago, a performer in the Vagina Monologues, Corey-Lynn Valentine in Fanny and Manny Tie the Knot Dinner Theatre, and Tanya in Mamma Mia. Her love of acting led her to earned her Diploma in Visual and Performing Arts – Drama from Keyano College.

On top of acting, Alex’s other passion is dance. She started dancing at 11 years old at Taylor Dance Studio, and then moved to Keyano Conservatory dance program to study Modern, Jazz, and Ballet. She started teaching dance in 2008 at the Keyano Conservatory, and in 2012 helped open UpTown! at the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts where she teaches various dance styles.

She was also the Choreographer for Thickwood Heights Theatriks’ performance of Willy Wonka Jr., Westwood’s Cheepiyak Theatre’s performance of Urinetown, the Waypoints Dinner Theatre productions in collaboration with Theatre; Just Because, Theatre; Just Because production of Evil Dead the Musical, and Keyano Theatre’s production of The Great Gatsby.

COVID-19 precautions

Theatre; Just Because is dedicated to keeping our facilitators and participants as safe as possible at our workshops and other events. We ask that everyone attending adheres to the AHS, facility, and TJB guidelines:

  • Anyone attending a TJB event is required to wear a face mask.
  • Maintain physical distancing (6 feet) when possible.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available.
  • No lingering/grouping in hallways or outside classrooms.
  • Anyone showing signs of being ill with flu-like symptoms will NOT be permitted to attend.
