In part 3 of this 3 part investment series, Lynda Thai-Baird (CFMRT Manager) & Clayton Varjassy (BMgt '13) will cover the following topics through the use of hands on simulations in the University's state of the art Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching (CFMRT):

  • Market microstructure (bid & ask, market liquidity, unrealized & realized profit & loss)
  • Portfolio management (diversification, rebalancing & optimization)
  • Equity valuation (Dividend Discount Model, Discounted Cash Flow Model, PE valuation)

Parts 1 & 2 of this series are lecture based, part 3 includes a tour and hands-on simulation in the Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching (CFMRT, aka the Trading Room) at the University of Lethbridge. Transportation to and from the University (from the Gem of the West Museum in Coaldale) is included in part 3's registration cost.

Please note: The lectures in this series were created to build on one another, but attendance at all three is not required.

About the Instructors

Lynda Thai-Baird has been the Manager of the Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching at the University of Lethbridge since 2010. She graduated from the University of Lethbridge in 2007 with a Bachelor of Management degree, majoring in Finance, and completed her Business Administration Diploma at the Lethbridge College, majoring in Marketing, in 2003.


Prior to working at the University, Lynda obtained 5 years’ experience in the Financial Services Industry working as an Account Manager at the Royal Bank of Canada and as an Associate at RBC Dominion Securities; where she completed the Investment Funds in Canada Course, Canadian Securities Course, and Professional Financial Planning Course offered by the Canadian Securities Institute.


Lynda is a co-creator of the University’s FIATSS – Financial Investment Analysis and Trading Simulation Software, an in-house application used to create live trading cases that utilize real-world historical market data combined with assigned funds. This software provides users an experiential learning experience with opportunities to re-live past market scenarios, educating them on how the market works, as well as teaches how to effectively trade and manage financial risk using real historical information and data.

Clayton Varjassy started investing in currencies in 2006 and continued his passion with the pursuit of a Bachelor of Management from the University of Lethbridge, majoring in Finance and minoring in New Media and Supply Chain Management. He graduated in 2013 with Honours of Great Distinction and led his graduating class' invocation speech. He was a member of the Student Managed Investment Fund, an exclusive class for top students majoring in Finance at the University.

In his final semester he was recruited to create and teach finance simulations for classes in the University's Centre for Financial Market Research and Teaching (CFMRT, aka the Trading Room) that utilized a speciality piece of software called Rotman Interactive Trader. He managed the CFMRT for a year while covering a maternity leave and coached the University's first participating team in the Rotman International Trading Competition. The team placed 13th out of 52 international schools, and 7th out of 52 in algorithmic trading.

He was the creator of the University's Inaugural High School Finance Competition and the creator of the Student Professional Development Program Finance Industry Evening's trading & investment simulations. He was the hosting representative for the first ever Canadian arm of the University Trading Challenge and is a co-creator of the University's FIATSS - Financial Investment Analysis and Trading Simulation Software.
