Lily’s Story

A little back story on Lily. She was born on June 13, 2017 (so she is 4 now and will be 5 by the tournament). She was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 4 months old. Her cancer did not respond to standard chemotherapy regimens, and it spread aggressively for months. During this time, she had several brain surgeries as part of her treatment and during one operation had a significant stroke. In Spring 2018,

Lily was fortunate enough to be the first at CHEO to try a new medication that saved her life. Within weeks of this leading-edge treatment, Lily was finally well enough to be discharged and go home.

Unfortunately, the damage from the stroke continued to cause issues and she developed epilepsy. At first, the seizures were mild but eventually took over her entire brain. She regressed significantly and was having up to 100 seizures a day. We took the drastic step to have a surgery called a hemispherectomy where they disconnected and disabled the left hemisphere of her brain. It involved intense inpatient rehab to teach her body to function solely using the one remaining brain hemisphere. The challenges were worth it as her seizures completely stopped and she began to relearn many of the developmental skills she had lost.

There haven't been many periods of calm in her life as her cancer relapsed in November 2021. We went down to SickKids in December and a neurosurgeon was able to remove close to 90% of the tumor. It has quickly started to grow back, and we are currently trying to get her enrolled in a promising clinical trial in the first drug ever developed specifically targeting her cancer type.
