Indian Summer Festival 2018

Histories, Mysteries and Mischief
A walking tour of Kitsilano

This special walking tour is led by Naveen Girn and Milan Singh (researchers/time travellers/detectives/hosts) of the Nameless Collective podcast. They take you back in time to the Kitsilano of the early 1900s when sawmills lined False Creek, and pioneering Sikh families lived in Kits, creating a strong community in the face of key struggles such as regaining the right to vote, immigration reform, and labour movements.

This will be a walk through history and through lesser known stories, with two deeply knowledgeable raconteurs. Hear stories about meetings that happened at West 2nd Ave Gurdwara, the first Sikh temple in North America. Hear tales of Bhai Bhag Singh (and the burning of medals), Husain Rahim (man of round head and hot temper), and Bhai Mewa Singh. The tour will end with refreshments (included in your ticket) and a chance to interact with the tour leaders.

A note from your tour leaders:

We will meet at 1866 West 2nd Avenue and end the tour at East India Carpets 1606 W 2nd Ave. We will be walking and talking you through Kits for about 90 mins. There is not a lot of walking, but please wear comfortable shoes and bring sun hats/protection and water. Not all curbs are cut, so please let us know if you require any assistance with accessibility.

The tour is limited to 22 people. Book your tickets early!
