Indian Summer Festival 2019

Trigger Me This: An Evening of Comedy, Outrage, and Debate

“Writer, actor and improv comedy master Richard Side has run Canada’s hottest virtual comedy club – The Vancouver Sun

Co-presented with SFU Woodwards and Side Entertainment

From Richard Side, creator of the hit radio series The Debaters on CBC Radio One comes an entertaining new stage format that asks a panel of talented comedians and the audience to decide where jokes cross the line and go from being inoffensive to being off-putting and even toxic. In an age of polarized politics and social media outrage, stand-up comics remain the champions of free speech. Although traditionally granted the right to offend, even they are having a tough time navigating this new world that sees both increasing sensitivity and decreasing decorum. Trigger Me This enlists their humour and fearlessness as they join with the audience in an entertaining exploration of what makes us laugh, what makes us shudder and what makes us do both simultaneously. If you don’t find at least some of the material presented at this show offensive, there’s something wrong with you!

Trigger Me This showcases some of Canada’s funniest people including Zarqa Nawaz, Sultana of the Sardonic and creator of the hit sitcom Little Mosque on the Prairie, Vancouver favourite Yumi Nagashima, and Canadian Comedy Awards nominee Darcy Michael with Richard Side himself playing host. Indian Summer Festival and SFU Woodwards are pleased to collaborate with Richard Side to workshop and co-present the premiere of this format, making you the very first audience to ever experience it. The first half of the evening will follow a traditional stand-up format, the second half will poll the audience for comments and votes. Be part of the making of what is destined to become a new international entertainment format.

Come early and grab a pre-show drink at the bar onsite. Seating is first come, first served.

Trigger Warning: The intention of this event is to explore mature content (not suitable for children), with a curiosity about the right to offend - to whom is the right to offend given, and when? As a result, this event will reference sensitive sites of identity, marginalization, and/or lived experiences. The artists and audience may cross boundaries, in order to genuinely interrogate the location of comedy and humour in this specific political moment.
