While we tend to associate illegal drugs with addiction, there is emerging evidence that this is just the tip of an iceberg. Alcohol and prescription drugs account for more addiction problems than all illegal drugs combined. Now we see that the development of products and activities that have immersive appetite appeal has led to a widening world of behavioural addictions. While gambling is the most commonly recognized example of behavioural addictions, gaming and internet addictions are emerging as major health challenges for adolescents and young adults. In addition, people are self-identifying themselves as being addicted to a range of behaviours including sex, shopping, eating, and even work. Among other things, what does this mean for how we understand addiction, identify it and – just as importantly – what does it mean for treatment and recovery? Join us for an evening where we explore these questions with experts in the field.
