About this event

Interested in learning Japanese but don't know where to start? Have you ever wanted to brush up or expand your Japanese but never had the time?

Our Japanese Language Class is the perfect way to introduce yourself to the language and learn the basics of conversation and context. This class is for absolute beginners or those wanting to brush up on their Japanese in anticipation of travelling to Japan. Special emphasis will be place on “survival Japanese”. This class is for those ages 12 and up, although it is geared to a high school/post-secondary level of student.

An overview of the lessons that will be learned in our winter class:

  • Identify feelings
  • Exchange greetings and farewells
  • Apologize and respond to apology
  • Express and respond to gratitude
  • Distinguish particular Japanese sounds
  • Recognize and pronounce most kana-based (moraic) sounds
  • Distinguish between formal and informal situations
  • Address others appropriately
  • Recognize that some words are inappropriate in certain contexts
  • Understand and use some simple idiomatic expressions as set phrases
  • Survival Japanese or common phrases for tourists

Class Details:

  • Runs from January 12th - March 16th
  • 10 lessons total
  • Classes are on Thursdays, and run from 6pm - 7pm
  • Location of class is in Nikka Yuko's Bunka Center, inside the Dr. Kubo Programming Room


  • $100/person for 10 lessons
