About this Event

Sat-Jun-22: ATTILA FIAS TRIO

:: Attila Fias - piano

:: Paco Luviano - bass

:: Rich Brisco - drums

Social is proud to continue it's new JAZZ AFTER DARK Saturday night jazz series with acclaimed Hungarian born pianist Attila Fias, known widely for his adaptability and particularly as a Brazilian specialist (he is the piano player for the Toronto Samba Jazz Connection!).

The Attila Fias Trio is an exciting piano trio that blurs the boundaries of jazz and world music from Brazil, Hungary, India and more. As the leader and composer for the group Attila synthesizes it all into one distinct musical flavour with his jazz background serving as the glue that binds it together. Playing original music as well as arrangements of jazz, world and Brazilian standards, this trio seems to read each other’s minds as they improvise and explore new musical territory. Attila’s trio has played in the Kensington Jazz Festival, Markham Jazz Festival, TD Niagara Jazz Festival, TD Toronto Jazz Festival and jazz clubs all across the country. They also performed centre stage at the Los Angeles Convention Center for the 61st Primetime Emmy Award Governor’s Ball. Recently they played a concert in Ottawa as part of the Canada 150 celebrations in collaboration with the Embassy of Hungary.

About ATTILA FIAS:

As a Hungarian-born, Toronto-raised world-jazz pianist, composer, arranger and producer, Attila Fias is highly in demand. His extensive experience includes performing/recording with notable international musicians such as Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), renowned tabla master Zakir Hussain, New York jazz harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens, and other Indian stars including Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan in venues such as Wembley Stadium, Madison Square Garden Theatre, Sydney SuperDome and venues and festivals all across Canada and the US. Recent performances include a concert with Sarah Slean and the Niagara Symphony, Jazz-FM concerts with June Garber and Erin Weinstein, a critically acclaimed tour with Soulpepper Theatre Company in New York City, and concerts at Festival de Febrero in Mexico. Attila has produced, composed, arranged, and performed for Universal/MCA, Sony/BMG, EMI America, Somerset Entertainment, Fisher Price and independent labels, on over 100 internationally distributed CDs. They have sold over two million units worldwide, including multiple gold and platinum-selling albums in Canada and the US. He has also recorded three full albums of his original material. “Ride”, released in October 2016 received regular airplay on Jazz-FM and CBC Radio.

"Attila's new recording Ride is an explosion of incredible playing married to great compositions. The influences are many, but the sound is uniquely his own. His music has been sounding great on JAZZ-FM91"

-- Brad Barker, Musical Director/On-Air Host, Jazz-FM91, Toronto

"...this pianist possesses, in addition to manifold chops, a desire to spring his music from the confines of traditional songwriting. Challenging rhythmic structures... relentlessly playful... stunning piano work"

-- Hour Magazine (Montreal)

"Fias' sophisticated playing, classical influences and penchant for shifting rhythms recall Dave Brubeck, while the irreverence and skilled group improvisation evoke The Bad Plus."

-- The Toronto Star

"... your CD, ...just killed me. Everybody's playing is amazing and our tunes are beautiful and fascinating. Wherever your music is coming from, it is some of the most original and intriguing music I've heard in a long time. I'm totally amazed at what you've done."

-- Don Thompson, Jazz Legend, Order of Canada
