About this event

Beach United welcomes Paul Novotny (bass), Joe Sealy, (piano) and Jackie Richardson (vocals) as we open our 2021 - 2022 season of Jazz and Reflection with a livestream performance that will knock your socks off. All three are outstanding musicians with illustrious careers; have collaborated with many great artists and have been nominated for, and won, numerous awards. The livestream will be recorded and made available for viewing through Facebook for one month - so if you can't make the Livestream date - you will still have the opportunity to hear these extraordinary artists. If you wish to attend this performance in person - there are 25 tickets available, first come first serve, for double vaccinated guests only (at the request of the artists). The tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased here:

Paul Novotny (bass) has performed with jazz luminaries Cedar Walton, Geoff Keezer, Kenny Wheeler, Scott Hamilton, Jo-Anne Brackeen, Lynn Arrial, Richard Wyands, Moncef Genoud, Junior Mance and Don Thompson. He has accompanied singers Roger Whitaker, Molly Johnson, Tabe Johnson, Jackie Richardson, Susannah McCorkle, Trudy Desmond, Alana Bridgewater, Michael Dunston, Carol Welsman, Barbra Lica and David Clayton Thomas. As a studio bassist, he played on the 2018 platinum selling video game soundtrack Cuphead. In 2016, Paul began leading his own ensembles and released his jazz duo recording titled "Look Ahead" with Robi Botos. The Hi-Def 24/96 surround-sound version is distributed in Germany by highresaudio.com. German magazine Audio-Test declared "Look Ahead" to be "A Diamond of Modern Sound" and referred to Paul as "The Highly Doped Canadian Bassist."

Joe Sealy (piano) has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, recording artist and radio broadcaster. His 1997 Juno Award winning "Africville Suite" inspired Ron Foley MacDonald of The Halifax Daily News to write; “This may be the most important jazz album released in Canada this year”. Joe has presented “The Africville Suite” in concert venues and at music festivals across Canada as well as Denmark, Norway and the USA. As a pianist, he has toured with “Blood Sweat and Tears” and performed with such artists as Joe Williams, Milt Jackson, Veronica Tennant, and Timothy Findlay. As well, Joe and his longtime music partner Paul Novotny have created a unique sounding jazz duo. Together they have released four CD’s, achieved two Juno nominations and shared the concert stage in Montreal & Toronto jazz festivals with Michel Petruciani, Brad Mehldau / Charlie Haden, Red Mitchell / Herb Ellis and the Bobo Stenson Trio.

Jackie Richardson (vocals) is one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues and jazz, who has performed across the country and internationally. She is also an award-winning actor who received a Gemini Award for her performance in "The Gospel According to the Blues". Her TV work includes roles in This Is Wonderland, Sue Thomas F.B Eye, Further Tales of the City, Road to Avonlea, and among her film roles are appearances in The Frenchman, Extreme Measures, Three Men and a Baby, and Hoover vs Kennedy. Jackie has appeared in films directed by Sidney Lumet and Norman Jewison. She has starred opposite Christopher Reeve, Sidney Poitier, Jane Seymour and Keifer Sutherland. On stage she has played two fabled singers, Big Mama Thornton and Alberta Hunter, and starred in "Ain’t Misbehavin’". Richardson received a Dora Mavor Moore Award for "Cookin’ At The Cookery" and she counts her appearance at a gala concert at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall marking Canada’s 150 birthday as a one of the highlights of her career. Jackie began her career at the age of 7 singing in her church choir. At the age of 17, Jackie led her first group. Since then she has acted in film, theatre and television and toured across Canada and the world performing with renowned artists such as Ray Charles, Anne Murray, Dr. John and Celine Dion to name a few. Jackie has also hosted radio, television and stage shows garnering rave reviews wherever she appears. Jackie continues to act on stage and screen today and can be seen throughout Canada and the U.S.
