"Even when the streamers, confetti, and brass bands aren't there, you can see and hear them." - Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

About the film

BLACK ORPHEUS
BRAZIL 1959 100min. PG
Directed by Marcel Camus
Starring Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, Lourdes de Oliveira
Featuring the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá

The idea of taking the myth of Orpheus and Eurydices and moving it to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval, must have seemed like a fever dream to the French director Marcel Camus. 1959's Black Orpheus/Orfeu Negro with its dream-like urgency and propulsive samba fuelled soundtrack, went on to win the Palme d'Or and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The story of the ill-fated lovers pulled bossa-nova and samba onto the world stage with the great composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and at the time, a lesser known Luiz Bonfá, adding their trademark sounds to the lush cinematic landscape. - GARVIA BAILEY
