Event description
The Torys LLP Corporate and Securities Forum at Western Law is proud to host Jean Tirole, recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics.

About this event

The Torys LLP Corporate and Securities Forum at Western Law presents the Business and Law Scholars keynote lecture: "Markets and Morality" by Jean Tirole.

Professor Tirole’s lecture will revisit a nagging question: should we expect the market to weaken our moral compass, as civil society, religions and philosophers often warn? How powerful is the common excuse, “If I don’t do it, someone else will”? Professor Tirole will discuss the circumstances under which competition is likely to push managers to cut ethical corners or, on the contrary, to boost prosocial behavior; and he will reflect on whether the presence of non-profits can bring ethical discipline to the market.

About Jean Tirole

Jean Tirole is the chairman of the Foundation JJ Laffont-Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) in Toulouse, France. He is also a visiting professor at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Tirole’s research covers industrial organization, regulation, finance, macroeconomics and banking, and psychology-based economics. He has published over two hundred articles in international reviews, as well as twelve scientific books. Published in English in 2017, his latest book entitled Economics for the Common Good is accessible to a wide audience and available in a number of other languages.

Tirole is also laureate of numerous international distinctions, including the 2007 CNRS gold medal and the 2014 Sveriges Riksbank prize in economic sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel.
