In late nineteenth-century South Asia, the arrival of print fostered a dynamic and interactive literary culture. Within the pages of Urdu-language publications, readers found a public sphere that encouraged their reactions to featured content. Through discussion of Avadh Akhbar, Avadh Punch, satire, and early novels, this talk shows how literature in late nineteenth-century South Asia became a site in which modernity could be challenged, daily life satirized, and new futures imagined.
