Journey to Promote Mental Health: A Training Series for Individuals Working with Immigrants and Refugees  

Invites Front-Line Workers to a 1.5 hour Webinar 

"Practical strategies for providing culturally appropriate support to newcomers”

DESCRIPTION:  

Building upon knowledge from the two-day foundation training session, the webinar will further strengthen participants’ knowledge on mental health and provide skills to apply intervention strategies

Topics: 

The topics presented will be in the context of newcomers’ mental health. By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the influences of culture, cultural identity, stigma and intergenerational relationship on newcomer’s mental health and help seeking behaviors
  2. Recognize the differences in how people perceive, explain and express mental illness across cultures
  3. Create culturally relevant early identification and intervention strategies
  4. Conduct cultural assessment and develop a culturally competent care plan to support the newcomers from diverse background

Presenters: 

Dr. Samuel Law, MDCM, MPH, FRCP(C) is actively involved in the Equity, Gender and Population Division at the Department of Psychiatry. His research interests are in cross-cultural issues in psychiatry, including cross-cultural health systems studies, health economics, and knowledge translation in service delivery models. As the Lead of the Department's China Initiative, he is also involved in liaising and developing research and educational exchanges with Chinese counterparts. His clinical work is mainly in community based care, with emphases in Assertive Community Treatment, and clinical consultations to ethnic minority populations.
