The Saskatoon Concert Band is celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a free concert at the Broadway Theatre on April 30 at 7:30 p.m.! The concert will feature music written to celebrate Her Majesty’s coronation, music that reflects her personal tastes, and music that celebrates the Commonwealth, Canada and its Indigenous Peoples. Our special guest is Indigenous Drummer Rylan Smallchild.

"March Crown Imperial" by Sir William Walton and "Nimrod", from "Enigma Variations", by Sir Edward Elgar, were two of many pieces performed for Her Majesty's coronation. The Quick March of the Coldstream Guard "Milanollo", composed J.V. Hamm, is one of Her Majesty's favourite marches. The "Pirates of Penzance" selection, by Gilbert and Sullivan, "Salute to Bob Hope" and "Music of the Beatles" reflect the breadth of the music that Her Majesty enjoys. "Australian Up_Country Tune" by Percy Grainger brings in a touch of The Commonwealth. "Quebec Folk Fantasy", by Canadian composer Howard Cable, will add a uniquely Canadian element to the evening.

The highlight of the "Jubilee Celebration" is our collaboration with Indigenous Drummer Rylan Smallchild. We are honoured to be joined by Rylan in the performance of Dr. David Kaplan's "Meuwechetuwin". Dr. Kaplan was a Saskatchewan composer who wrote the piece in 2012 for Music Monday. Meuwechetuwin was realized with the collaboration of local Indigenous artists.

Tickets are free of charge, thanks to the generous support of the Government of Canada. All attendees require a ticket.

Ryan Smallchild, Indigenous Drummer

His Spirit name is “He Who Sits On A Spotted Horse”. Rylan is from the Beardys & Okemasis First Nation Of Treaty 6 Territory.

Saskatoon has been his home for the past 10 years, where he has built a cultural-arts foundation of teaching, composing, and performing singing/drumming. Rylan has shared these gifts with many cultures from all over the world at many events in the city and across the province both as a solo artist and as part of a group. Smallchild is one of the founding members of the Long Walkers Drum Group, who perform regularly at events, and often for free at the Vimy Memorial in Kiwanis Park.

In his dedication to the community, Rylan has taken an active role in reducing poverty and increasing safety professionally and through community action initiatives.

We are honoured and pleased to have Ryan collaborate with us in this performance of "Meuwechetuwin" by David Kaplan.
