Description
Hey you! Have you joined the Ladies Learning Code email list? If not, click here.
What is Ladies Learning Code?
We're a not-for-profit startup in Toronto who provide women (and men*) the opportunity to learn beginner-friendly computer programming and other technical skills through hands-on workshops. We're all about showing people that learning to hack can be fun!
*Men are welcome to attend workshops (and they do!), but we request that you bring with you an additional female learner where possible.
A special thanks to Volta who will be hosting us in their brand new space for this workshop!
Your Lead Instructor:
Sreejata Chatterjee (@antiphobe)
LeadSift Inc
What are you passionate about?
Science and Logic as a whole, Computers in particular! Solving problems and Optimizing Code, work, and life. And food.
Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
I believe women are meant to excel in coding, owing to their ultimate patience and attention to detail! But there are very few women in tech/who learn code, and since being able to write or understand basic code is almost like being able to communicate in the modern tech-ridden world, I would love to help more women get up to speed.
Why Python?
Python is a great language for beginners. Its beautiful and clean-looking syntax means you'll spend less time being confused (it looks sort of like English!), and more time understanding and applying the fundamentals of programming. Plus, even as a beginner, you can do fun things with Python, like make games and draw shapes!
In this Introduction to Python workshop, you will create an app that sells tickets, a "Guess the Number" game (Price is Right, anyone?) and as part of your final project, you'll re-create the schoolyard classic, Hangman.
What will I have learned by the end of the workshop?
By the end of the workshop, you'll know the answers to the following:
- What is programming?
- What companies and organizations use Python?
- What is Python used for?
- What is the Python shell?
You'll also be introduced to integers, strings, lists, dictionaries, objects and types, plus conditionals and loops. (Not sure what any of that means? This workshop is perfect for you!)
Theory is great, but as with all of our workshops, you'll spend most of the day "getting your hands dirty" and writing code. Join us and Lead Instructor Sreejata and you'll get lots of experience with the following:
- Using the Python shell
- Running Python files
- Creating an app for selling tickets
- Creating a "Guess the Number" game (think Price is Right)
- Creating a Hangman game
Is this workshop for you?
This workshop has been designed for absolute beginners. If you know nothing about coding or computer programming, you’ve come to the right place! It's also a good fit for you if you've been to other Ladies Learning Code workshops and are looking to build upon your previous knowledge, and stay fresh. Our only expectation is that you know how to open a web browser and do something online like checking your email. (But if you’re reading this, we’re pretty sure you know how to do that.)
If I came to a Ladies Learning Code "Intro to Ruby" workshop, will this be repetitive?
That depends! Ruby and Python are similar in that they are both easy to learn, making them ideal for beginners. If you were at our Ruby workshop and understood everything perfectly, then this might not be the class for you. If you are still a little fuzzy and want another chance to practice the basics, this workshop will be ideal for solidifying your knowledge of introductory level programming, while learning a new, fun language!
Requirements:
This workshop is BYOL - bring your own laptop! You must own or have access to a laptop with wi-fi for which you have administrative permissions, and you need to bring it with you. Workshops are taught in English. Please be sure to bring your powercord. And a travel mug, if you have one!
Are you quaified to help mentor at this workshop? Great - our workshops absolutely wouldn't be possible without the incredible developers who help us out! Please join our 'tech help' email list here.
What's Included?
- Approximately a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio
- A fun and inclusive learning envionment
- A great venue
- Catered breakfast, lunch and snacks

What participants say about our workshops:
"Honestly, the set up of one instructor - four students is brilliant."
"I'm super impressed with the organizers and participants, and I think it's a really valuable initiative."
"[The best part of the workshop was] the positivity, helpfulness and eagerness to learn/teach of every person in the room."
"After years of teaching myself how to code, I wasn't sure how I'd find the collaborative experience of an LLC workshop - but it completely exceeded my expectations. The lead instructor was clear and thorough, and the volunteer instructors were always ready to throw new challenges at us the moment they saw we'd completed the current task. Solving a coding problem has always been exciting for me, but having a group of people equally excited about it was amazing!"
"[My favourite part was] the casual nature of things, and the fact that all the instructors walked around and helped out learners everywhere around the room - so I got to meet and talk to a bunch of people who were experienced and gain some perspectives. The food was great too. ;)"
