Description

“The purpose of your life is not to be an ornament to be looked at, but to do and feel and contribute.” —Taryn Brumfitt

In honour of International Women’s Day, the Junior League of Edmonton presents a screening and panel discussion of Embrace, an award winning film about body positivity and empowerment. We are pleased to invite leading women in nutrition, fitness, and mental health to dig deep into the topics of the film Embrace.

Poor body image has become a global epidemic, particularly amongst women — and one woman, Taryn Brumfitt, had had enough. The Australian writer and filmmaker shared a before and after image of herself that offered a different perspective than we’re used to seeing in the media — an image that proved she was embracing her body, even though it may not be the size that the media deems ‘acceptable.’

With that decision, she launched a movement — the Body Image Movement — and travelled the world to speak with other women and create the documentary Embrace. Brumfitt went through a transformation from someone who hated her body to someone who loved her body, from being devastated by what she saw in the mirror to proudly showing it off for the world to see.

Join us for an empowering and affirming night of discussion about what it means to be a woman in today's world.

Light refreshments will be served.

The screening will be accompanied by a panel discussion featuring Lalitha Taylor, Helene Tremblay and Shara Vigeant.

Panelists:

Shara Vigeant

Shara Vigeant is the Owner of SVPT Fitness & Athletics. She has been a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach for 13 years. From her own experiences with body image issues and an eating disorder, Shara felt it was important to build a fitness facility that focused on body positivity and achieving health and fitness the right way. Shara has lectured on various fitness topics in the US, at her alma mater the University of Alberta, as well as at other various health and fitness workshops and events in and around Edmonton. She was a Global Woman of Vision in 2014, and has been featured on numerous TV programs including Alberta Primetime, Global News, CTV News, and CTV.

Lalitha Taylor

After being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at 19, Lalitha Taylor’s desire to help prevent and manage her disease as well as provide individuals with a greater quality of life prompted her to become a dietitian. Taylor is a senior dietitian with Edmonton Southside Primary Care Network and is also a national spokesperson for the nearly 6,000 members of Dietitians of Canada. She regularly contributes to radio, print and media events, including CTV2’s Alberta Primetime and Global Edmonton. Taylor donates much of her time to her local community, including Youth Empowerment and Support Services and the U of A nutrition program, where she mentors students. She is passionate about strengthening our communities’ knowledge about nutrition and igniting a love for healthy living.

Helene Tremblay
