THE 519 PRESENTS SMALL PRINT TORONTO’S DIY SUPERHERO LAB

BAM! POW! ZAP! Everyone knows Wonder Woman, Spiderman and the Flash, but superheroes can come in all shapes and sizes. What does it take to be a superhero in today’s Toronto?

Writers aged 6-9 can create their own superheroes with author-illustrator Evan Munday at Small Print Toronto’s DIY Superhero Lab. on Saturday, May 5, from 10am-noon at The 519 (519 Church St). This workshop will focus on the one thing that superheroes from The Avengers to The X-Men have in common: an incredible origin story.

The 519 presents Small Print Toronto’s DIY Superhero Lab is part of its Kids & Youth Action and Arts Space, a series of creative and social programs for LGBTQ and Trans families

The 519’s Kids Action and Arts Space (KAAS) is a free, drop-in program that offers kids who are 6 to 9 years old a fun place to connect, meet friends and new peers and explore cool opportunities, starting January 20th until December 15th of 2018.

When: the first and third Saturday of each month, from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.

In 2018, The 519 is collaborating with new and returning community artists and educators to facilitate arts and movement-based activities for queer, trans, and gender nonbinary kids and the kids of queer and trans families.

Throughout the year participants will explore activities like improv, drama, story writing and telling, visual arts and music. This time around, more movement-based activities such as cycling, hiking, skateboarding, yoga, bouldering, parkour, social circus, ice-skating and dancing will be weaved into KAAS programming. As always, no experience in these activities is required – just a desire to try new things and meet new people!

Collectively, we strive to create a safer, supportive and inspiring space where everyone – from facilitators to participants – can bring their full selves into the space, feel celebrated and continue to develop and strengthen their skills in self-expression.
