Katie Diamond’s Sunday Jazz Cabaret on September 29: Stay Tuned/Restezà-l’écoute, featuring singing sensation Ferline Regis

About this Event

Kicking off a new season of Katie Diamond’s Sunday Jazz Cabaret on September 29: Stay Tuned/Restezà-l’écoute, featuring singing sensation Ferline Regis, who recently bowled over judges and audiences alike on La Voix, Quebec’s own high-profile TV vocal competition! Ferline has a powerful, gospel-type vocal presence we’ll hear lend an exciting and unusual dimension to this performance of both classic, mainstream jazz standards and the enduring French-language jazz hits she loves.

Ferline grew up in Haiti, hearing and loving Afro-Caribbean music. Here she was also exposed to R&B, Soul, Pop and jazz. She has a degree in music from the University of Ottawa, and her extensive performance experience includes singing at the Canadian National Arts Centre, the Parliament of Canada, Ottawa Bluesfest and the festivities for Canada Day.

She released her debut solo album in July 2015, and a second full length album in the fall of 2018.

Ottawa Jazz Scene has said of Ferline that she "has real star power, and her heartfelt husky vocals command attention."

Ferline will be backed by a quartet of local musicians who will fill the Mill Road space with their intoxicating solo and ensemble sounds.

José Monchito on drums, has a degree in jazz from Humber College and has played with such well known performers as Kellylee Evans, Steve Boudreau, Virginia MacDonald, Miguel de Armas and Lucas Haneman.

Ron Ferguson has a distinct style on both trumpet and flugelhorn that is reminiscent of such greats as Clark Terry and Art Farmer. Ron has played in some of his brother Mark’s ensembles and with many of the other top players in Ottawa.

Neil Sealy on bass, is originally from Barbados, and has played with a broad array of Ottawa jazz folk, from the late pianist Norbert Boyce (a fixture at the Chateau Laurier for many years) to classicallytrained Virginia Simmonds. Neil is justly famous among local musicians for his unerring musical ear.

Karl Nerenberg on keyboard, is known primarily as a filmmaker, television/radio producer and journalist. But as an enthusiastic jazz pianist, he performs regularly for benefit events and as a member of host bands for Ottawa Jazzworks' monthly jam sessions.
