Event description

Description

"Isn't it historically & socially interesting that in times of grave crisis, such as wartime or during the Depression, we turn to gardening?" - Howard-Yana Shapiro

There is perhaps nothing more powerful than maintaining control of your own food supply. Kitchen gardens can take many shapes and sizes, from patio gardens, to raised beds to rows of fields crops. However, the goal remains the same: the ability to walk out into the garden in your slippers and pick something to eat nearly every day of year.

This backyard kitchen garden workshop will provide some of tools you'll need to start and maintain your own kitchen garden. We'll be offering a tour of our backyard permaculture gardens complete with integrated chicken coop + compost systems, light greywater re-use, edible plant nursery, rain gardens, greenhouses, fruit trees and veggie gardens; all on 1/10th of an acre lot.

We'll also cover:

- crop planning for year-round harvest
- lesser known fruits, herbs & perennial vegetables
- edible flowers
- flood & drought-proofing techniques
- seed starting & transplanting
- soil preparation techniques
- ideas for getting fresh garden produce into the kitchen
- Q & A

We'll also see how many edible plant species we can harvest into a beautiful salad to share together!
