Event description

Description

When we gather to create, what steps do we take to encourage constructive and courageous conversations?

We live in a time in which urgent conversation is needed on so many fronts: employment, democratic norms, and climate, to name a few. And yet, for those of us charged with facilitating those conversations, or in some cases, starting them, the task feels overwhelming. Fear stands in the way. What if people shy away, feel uncomfortable, shut down, feel attacked?

To create possibility, solve problems, and to think with foresight about the future, we can only have a positive impact if we encourage people to be courageous, and act with courage ourselves.

Architect and philosopher Christopher Alexander has noted that living systems are made up of wholes at every level of scale, from the individual, to the family, to large institutions. He suggests that things at each level get better not by the formation of grand plans or government edicts but from small acts of collaboration. Small acts like engaging in conversations that matter. Perhaps the simple act of fostering more authentic and courageous conversation, in whatever sphere of influence we have, is a powerful change agent.

Please join us as we both demonstrate this, and deconstruct it. The Kitchen Table Conversation is a place for dialogue among peers, and in this edition, we continue to reflect on the art and practice of dialogue itself. We'll explore questions such as:

  • What does courageous conversation look like?
  • How we can nurture groups as they step outside their comfort zone?
  • What might the potential impact of courageous dialogue be at each level of a system?
