Event description

Description

Did you know that the majority of the waste found on Vancouver beaches is made up of items like cigarette butts, bottle caps and food wrappers? Many of these items are made from plastic and designed to be used just once and then thrown away. Whether plastic is intended to be recycled or sent to landfills the sad truth is that hundreds of thousands of tonnes of it end up in our environments every year - but it doesn't have to be this way!

On September 21st, in honour of World Cleanup Day, Surfrider Foundation Vancouver and the David Suzuki Foundation and Greenpeace Canada are partnering to clean up and sort the waste collected on Kits beach, and we need your help! Our cleanups are a fun and easy way to get involved and give back.

Aside from signing up as a Beach Clean up Volunteer, you can also sign up as a Litter Sorting Volunteer. Litter sorting is a great way to learn about how we not just pick up litter, but also sort it into the various categories for recycling and proper disposal.

Safety First: We have a supply of buckets, burlap sacks, work gloves, and pickers. But please bring your own gloves and equipment if you have it available! For safety reasons please wear closed toed shoes and always use a picker to sift through the sand to avoid sharp objects. If you come across any sharp or hazardous object, mark it and tell us, our team can handle the safe removal.
