Rodolphe Kreutzer, a remarkable 18th century violinist whose own compositions have largely been forgotten, but whose name lives on through the works of others, provide the inspiration for this program. Beethoven’s heroic Sonata for Violin and Piano, and Janacek’s intensely descriptive and often frenetic string quartet are linked by the same name, the Kreutzer Sonata. The program closes with the intensity of the Grosse Fuge, one of Beethoven’s greatest achievements.
