Description

This is a peer support group facilitated by Laid Off Calgary. Themes and guest co-facilitators change from time to time and are described in the schedule below.

Schedule:

This meeting is for Thursday September 21, 2017, 1.30pm-3.00pm at the Alexander Calhoun Library

"Job Search Techniques - How To Get Noticed" will be facilitated by Laid Off Calgary founder Bianca Sinclair and Ana Lokotkova.

Ana is a professional resume writer and job interview coach with prior experience in recruitment and talent acquisition. She is passionate about helping Calgarians achieve their career aspirations by stepping up their job search techniques and self-presentation.

Takeaways:
- how to stand out from a large pool of job-seekers
- which job-hunt strategies are more productive
- how to make a successful impression on employers

LAID OFF?

  • Current job searching strategies aren't working?
  • Feeling isolated?
  • Struggling to stay motivated?
  • Stressed and anxious about the future?
  • Would you like to talk about it and pick up some new tips & strategies?

Join us in this peer support group for facilitated sharing and discussion.

Positively re-frame your experience of transition!

Want to know more about this group?

For those who have been laid off in Calgary and area, the group offers support and help for:

· Managing the stress and fear of your laid off experience
· Understanding the psychological aspects of job loss and what you can do about it
· Combatting the isolation and loss of self that can accompany unemployment
· Strategies for job search and how to effectively manage your time during transition, plus so much more...

Both the in-person and online Laid Off Calgary groups provide additional knowledge sharing, peer support and resources. Think "job search meets mindfulness".

Will the group help me find a job?
Many participants of Laid Off Calgary have since found work. Attending a group meeting doesn't guarantee a job but you will gain something different every time that can help you during your transition, cope better, pick up specific tips and resources, form new connections with other people and not feel so alone!

The group meetings are facilitated by trained volunteers. We employ different facilitation styles and coaching techniques to help you access your own inner wisdom and also provide a forum for listening to each other. Many members have new friends from the group and some have been able to help find others work.

What do I need to do next?

Register in advance (here in eventbrite) to hold your seat or sign up to the waitlist if the meeting is full. There are often last minute changes. Be prepared that in the Laid Off Calgary meetings we respect confidentiality and time of each other, we are non-judgemental, we listen, and we share from our own experiences.

** Please note: the meeting starts on the advertised time, if you may be running more than 5 minutes late or may not be able to attend, please contact me in advance so we can reschedule you for another meeting **

Also, if we understand that life happens and as with job searching so do last minute interviews and meeting requests... if you have booked for a Laid Off Calgary meeting and need to cancel - no worries! Sign back into eventbrite and cancel your ticket or email laidoffcalgary@gmail.com to let us know as soon as you can.

What does the meeting look like?

The group meeting is 90 minutes. These meetings are open to first-timers and regulars. The meeting format follows an agenda designed to get everyone feeling comfortable, talking (and listening), and to keep the meeting on track.

We start by establishing some ground rules for the discussion then the facilitators invite conversation. Often there is an advertised theme related to job search, career/life exploration, managing transitions, etc. In some group meetings we have group coaching (from a certified coach). There is a psychoeducational component (e.g. positive thinking strategies, learning about the stress response, finding resilience, grief process) with a key takeaway each week. With peer support participants can learn from others facing similar issues, feel more connected to others, pick up interpersonal skills and internalize lessons.

The facilitator ensures those who wish to talk can have a chance to share, or simply listen.

On some meetings we have special guests/industry experts attend and co-faciliate with Laid Off Calgary founder Bianca Sinclair.

Group size is capped to 12 participants each meeting.

FAQs

Why is there a limit of 12 people to a meeting?

Each meeting has a mix of familiar faces and new. I like the smaller group format for more comfortable conversations. It's better for participants and for the facilitator. Our 90 minute meetings go very fast! Our meetings are very interactive and powerful learning opportunities. We also need to know the number of registrants so we we don't go over the room capacity so we do ask that people register their interest to attend following the links in eventbrite.com. [To find our meetings search eventbrite.com for "Laid Off Calgary"].

FREE?!

Yes, it's free! I know... not many things in life are these days! Free doesn't mean no-value. I wanted to show our Calgary community that yes, it's possible to offer something quality at no cost to the individual - a platform where people willingly engage and connect in a positive way. I appreciate that not everyone has access to great Outplacement/career transition services from their last company (but there are so many alternatives!) Have you checked out this link on our website? Also, you can dial 2-1-1 who have the pulse on Calgary local resources.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

On street parking and limited parking at the library. Public transport options are available.

Note: this event is NOT provided by Calgary Public Library. This event is run independently by volunteers.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Contact Bianca by confidential email at laidoffcalgary@gmail.com

Are there other meetings?

Yes! We often host at other locations across Calgary, including other libraries, downtown offices and even at the bank! Search in eventbrite "Laid Off Calgary" or feel free to subscribe to our email list here to stay informed of upcoming meetings and other relevant job searching info in Calgary.
