Landing soon in Ottawa!

A singular audio play that collapses distance, pairing you with another audience member a thousand kilometers away.

This is a new kind of theatre. Part radio play, part walking tour, you are the audience, but you are also the actor. And your scene partner is doing exactly what you are doing – a thousand kilometers away.

LANDLINE from Neworld Theatre on Vimeo.

LANDLINE is a unique collaboration by two Canadian theatre companies from opposite sides of the country. When artists Adrienne Wong (Neworld Theatre, Vancouver BC) and Dustin Harvey (Secret Theatre, Halifax NS) met, they wondered if they could make a show that spanned the nation. Inspired by the immensity of Canada and the way we use technology to break down that space, LANDLINE collapses distance between two strangers in real time.

Audience members depart one at a time from a home base in the Arts Court Theatre every fifteen minutes. An audio guide prompts you to drift through the city streets and to stop at a series of locations linked to your memories and imagination. You conjure another city thousands of miles away, and there find your real-life scene partner. The story invites you to begin a short conversation by text message on topics like memories, absent loved ones, and massive change. At the end of the walk, you are drawn back to Arts Court where you will find your scene partner from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, this time on live video. Now face to face, how much will you reveal, and how much further will the conversation go?

LANDLINE is a pioneering Canadian work combining theatre and technology. A prototype was live tested between Vancouver and Halifax in September 2013, and the show will be touring internationally in 2015. The script was selected for publication in the Summer 2014 issue of Canadian Theatre Review on digital performance.

LANDLINE: Ottawa to Dartmouth is produced by Secret Theatre and Neworld Theatre in collaboration with Canada's National Arts Centre. In Dartmouth, LANDLINE is presented by the Prismatic Festival. In Ottawa, the show is produced with Arts Court as Venue Sponsor and with support from STO Union.

I'm confused. So we walk around and follow and actor?

You are guided on a walk by a track on an mp3 player. Think of it like the audio guide you might listen to in a museum. You will hear a voice telling you stories and giving you instructions. Your job is to listen carefully and act promptly. How far you go is entirely up to you.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Email or phone/text 613-697-1477. A front of house attendant will get back to you within a day or so.

What should I bring?

Bring your cellphone, headphones (but you can borrow ours, too) and a sense of adventure. Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. You can leave heavy bags with our trustworthy front of house attendants.

So I'll be texting?

Yup. Regular text messaging rates apply.

Can I bring a friend?

Please do! LANDLINE is an experience for one audience member at a time, so you can compare notes after the show. Performances begin every 15 minutes, so schedule your performance times next to each other and you're good to go.

Where does it begin?

The Home Base is on the second floor of Arts Court. Which second floor? Use the Daly Street entrance and take the first elevator to the second floor. Bam. You're there. Or ask the attendant at the Reception Desk.

Where does it end?

Same place as the start.

How long is the show?

The show is 60-minutes. You'll be spending most of that time outside.

This isn't one of those "participation" shows, is it?

We don't take you to dangerous locations nor do we ask you to do anything scary or embarassing. You are in control. Where you go is up to you.

If there are no actors, is this really theatre?

We think so. Come and check it out and we can talk after.
