Orpheus opens its 2017-2018 season with the Toronto premiere of Canadian composer Allan Bevan’s Last Light Above the World, a remembrance commemoration of the 1914-18 Great War.

This immersive musical journey will take place on Sunday, November 5th at 3:30 pm at Grace Church-on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Rd. The concert features themes of patriotism in contrast with xenophobia to lend the audience an uplifting perspective and room for reflection on war being a search for peace.

Last Light Above the World: A War Litany is a deeply moving and thrilling new work that gives life to one of the most complex and shattering events of world history. Not a religious requiem, Bevan has cultivated a new work with secular content and a universal spiritual expression. The emotionally charged and highly dramatic nature of the work will pay homage to the sacrifice made by millions, while celebrating the courage of each individual engaged in battle. The power, the passion, the pathos, the poignancy of human conflict is brought to life by the full-breathed choral soundscape of Orpheus.

With current topics of conflict and nationalism in mind, Cooper juxtaposes Bevan’s perspectives on war with American composer David Lang’s the national anthems. In the national anthems, Lang draws upon war phrases common to national anthems across 193 United Nations member states, bringing to light the xenophobic qualities of national anthems. With talk of war and standing on guard for the love of one’s country, he illustrates how anthems are rarely forms of peaceful expression.

The concert will also feature works by Khvoshchinsky, Sirett, and Ešenvalds. Orpheus will be joined by organ, chamber orchestra, and actors Hailey Gillis and Colin Palangio; audiences can absolutely expect something special.
