Description

Leadership in Complex Systems: New Models for a Changing World
Presented by SFU Continuing Studies' Executive Leadership Program

Today's increasingly complex and rapidly changing world calls for new leadership frameworks. Traditional, top-down approaches aren't enough to address the vast array of challenges that leaders are facing — often in unpredictable settings where networks span the globe. To be successful, progressive leaders must embrace new ways of thinking and transform their professional practices.

One of those new ways of thinking relates to feedback - specifically, how we receive it. Join special guest Sheila Heen, co-author of the best selling book Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well (even when it’s off-base, unfair, poorly delivered, and frankly, you’re not in the mood) for an evening of interactive learning. Sheila will be joined by faculty from SFU's Executive Leadership certificate program.

As Sheila notes, feedback is crucial in developing talent, improving morale, aligning teams, solving problems, and boosting the bottom line. The real leverage point for individual and organizational learning and change is in helping people get better at the challenging skill of receiving feedback so that they can drive their own learning.

Sheila will present a framework and tools for sorting through differing perceptions, regaining balance when the feedback is particularly rough, and managing common triggers so that we can learn and improve.

Event programme

  • 5:30pm - 6:30pm: Networking reception — canapés and refreshments served. Cash bar.

  • 6:30pm - 8:30pm: Interactive keynote presentation and moderated Q & A.

  • 8:30pm - 9:30pm: Informal conversations. Cash bar. Please note the formal programme ends at 8:30.
