Community Oven - success patterns for grass roots community development projects

By Duncan Ebata, Food Community Builder at
Shift! Food and Co-Founder of Front Street Community Oven

Duncan will share the story of how community oven project was started, how the team navigated building a community oven and structure on town land, how the highly engaged volunteer team was built, and what worked and what didn't work. Duncan will share community success patterns employed from the very beginning and success patterns learned along the way for areas including: funding and fundraising, operations, team building, community building and engagement, communications, stakeholder engagement and more. He'll share who we got involved early and why it was important for making everything easier, what we did for public communications which made fundraising and community support easier, and strategies for keeping momentum going.

Duncan Ebata is a social entrepreneur, systems thinker, experience host and food community builder at ShiftFood.org and FrontStreetOven.ca. Formerly a digital marketer, he is passionate about facilitating experiences that help people get more joy out of food, building deeper connections and re-authoring community narratives, building upstream community food security models, and lowering the barriers to healthy eating. He is excited about wood-fired cooking, and is active in finding ways for the community around Wolfville to prepare food together through unique events and hands on experiences. Duncan and his business partner, Adam Barnett, will be launching a series of Annapolis Valley Culinary Cycling Adventures in July 2019.
