Event Details

This two day course is highly recommended training for any Members in a supervisory role.

Day One

Supervisors are team leaders that lend direction to other staff, personnel, and crew on a daily basis. They can also be seen as role models and mentors. As an important part of any supervisory position in the workplace, knowing the roles you play and the responsibilities you have will contribute to a successful work environment, and enable you to co-create a productive, more communicative workplace with your departmental team and fellow co-workers.

Participants will learn about the legislated provisions, regulations and policies already set in place to ensure and enhance a respectful workplace. The workshop will also examine the issue of harassment and workplace violence, establishing practices for determining underlying causes, as well as positive strategies for addressing issues as they arise. For this seminar, active participation through discussion with the facilitator and the other attendees will be both welcome and encouraged.

Day Two

One of the key elements of any supervisory position is the leadership and team management of departmental personnel. This workshop will address effective approaches to building a team, the dynamics of power, and suggest alternative methods of communication and conflict management. The course will provide Members with the tools required to perceive potential situations of conflict and defuse them before problems, complaints, or grievances arise. It will also equip those in a supervisory position with the confidence to pursue issues through the appropriate channels of authority (from the Member to the Department Head to the Production) and to properly engage with those authorities.

Participants will explore their own leadership styles and those of their peers in this workshop on Effective Leadership. They will be encouraged to personalize their own leadership styles, acknowledging both their strengths and challenges through interactive group discussion, exercises, and critical assessment of leadership theories. Participants will leave feeling empowered to expand the principles of their leadership skills, and with the ability to better mentor team members and build stronger support networks through effective communication.
