Event Details

Jane’s Walk is a weekend of free neighbourhood walking tours held in cities around the world each May. Jane’s Walks are walking conversations about neighbourhoods and what matters to the people who live, work and play there. Anyone can volunteer to lead a Jane’s Walk, to offer their insider’s view of a neighbourhood and to invite people into conversation.

In Calgary, the annual event sees about 80 walks in various neighbourhoods across Calgary on topics as diverse as skateboarding, to urban design, to climate change resiliency. Over 400 people have led Jane’s Walks in Calgary. Calgary Foundation is the lead organization in Calgary and has organized the event since 2008 in partnership with Jane’s Walk international and cities around the world.

If you’re curious about leading a Jane’s Walk, the Calgary Foundation and The City of Calgary invite you to attend a “how-to” session. You will receive step-by-step instructions on how to bring your ideas and neighbourhood to life through a walking tour. You then may want to offer to design and lead a free walking tour as part of the 2020 Calgary Jane’s Walk festival (May 1, 2, 3 2020). But attending this workshop does not commit you to volunteering.

This workshop is free and ideal for community associations, recreation and cultural groups, schools, artists, and anyone interested in community, participation, and neighbourhood life. Snacks will be provided.

If you have any questions about this workshop or about leading your own Jane’s Walk, please contact:

Jane’s Walks are free, locally-led walking tours inspired by legendary urban activist Jane Jacobs, in which people get together to explore, talk about and celebrate their neighbourhoods. Where more traditional tours are a bit like walking lectures, a Jane’s Walk is more of a walking conversation. Walks can focus on almost any aspect of a neighbourhood, and on almost any topic you can think of. Walks can be serious or funny, informative or exploratory; they can look at the history of a place, or at what’s happening there right now.  Anyone can lead a walk–because everyone is an expert on the place where they live!

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She saw cities as ecosystems that had their own logic and dynamism which would change over time according to how they were used. With a keen eye for detail, she wrote eloquently about sidewalks, parks, retail design and self-organization. At the core of her work and thinking was the need to get out and walk your city and observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging.
