Event description

Description

Join us for Leading Roles: Parallels Between Female Southern Resident Orcas and Women Leaders!

Southern Resident orcas are an iconic, culturally significant and endangered population that spends the spring, summer and fall in the Salish Sea, an area surrounded by a human population of over seven million. As of April 2019, only 75 Southern Residents remain.

Southern Residents live in tight family groups, led by the population’s mature females. Both male and female offspring will stay with their mother for life. As leaders of the Southern Residents, female orcas play a crucial role in the health of their population.

On June 4, join the Georgia Strait Alliance and an all-female panel in a community discussion on the unique parallels between female Southern Residents and women in our society. Explore how women, female allies and mothers can take a leadership role in protecting Southern Resident matrilineal families from further decline.

We are thrilled to announce the panel for this event:

  • Dr. Erin Ashe: co-founder and Executive Director of the research and conservation non-profit, Oceans Initiative. Erin is also an organizer for the Women in Marine Mammal Science initiative, a global community of marine mammal scientists whose aim is to ensure that women can realize their full career potential in this field.
  • Dr. Frances Robertson: wildlife biologist and Marine Program Coordinator for San Juan County, USA. Frances has over a decade of marine mammal research experience studying the impacts of human activities on cetacean populations. She is also an organizer for the Women in Marine Mammal Science initiative.
  • Dr. Janni Aragon: Adjunct Assistant Professor in Political Science at the University of Victoria. Janni's research interests include Gender and Politics, American Politics, Women and Technology, Third Wave Feminisms, Social Movements, and Transnational Feminism.
  • Ku se maat, Shirley Williams: co-founder of Whiteswan Environmental, Registered Nurse and Seli7 etse Sxwo'le, Spirit of the Sxwo'le (reef-net). Shirley is dedicated to protecting the sovereignty of the Salish Sea for 7th generation sustainability. Her passion for holistic healthcare began when she started to work for her own community, the Lummi Nation.

The event will be moderated by Kylie Stanton, Global BC’s Vancouver Island videojournalist.

We acknowledge and respect the Lekwungen-speaking Peoples on whose traditional territories this gathering will occur and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSANEC peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
