Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Re-energize with other creative professionals to raise your game as a senior practitioner.

Practice new approaches, share ideas and learn new tools to use as a facilitator and innovator. Step back from the day-to-day and take a look at how you’ve been working with your peers, colleagues and clients. What’s working and what needs to change?

After the success of last year’s inaugural program by THNK Vancouver and Blueprint UX we're bringing back a second event—Leading Teams for Creativity: A Masterclass for UX and Design Professionals, a 1-day in-person program that will help build your creative confidence and competence.

  • Deepen your understanding of the interpersonal skills required to lead collaborative design and inspire diverse groups

  • Engage clients and team members to push their limits, building on the natural strengths of UX professionals for more fruitful collaborations and better ideas

  • Understand how your own personal preferences and blind spots can interfere with how participants act and react, and draw on your own facilitation skills to respond more effectively to client + stakeholder needs

  • Use new design thinking processes to move stakeholders (and ideas) out of their comfort zones

  • Identify and respond to group dynamics, plan for different learning styles, and manage difficult personalities, taking positive ownership of design conversations for effective collaboration and momentum

*Please note: as a prerequisite, participants should be familiar with design thinking practices. This session will focus on how to facilitate tools rather on a deep explanation of the process itself.

Sessions within the 1-day program include:

Foundations of facilitation

Gain a better understanding of your personal facilitation skills, strengths and advantages.

Creating creative conditions

Foster the conditions for success by gathering insight, building trust and holding space—especially when energy blockers or ambiguity paralyze creative juices.

Power of questions

The fine art of drawing someone out, of building a relationship based on curiosity and interest, is a vital creative tool. Build positive, trusting, balanced environments through the power of great questions.

Structuring conversations

We’ve all been in meetings where the same people get the majority of airtime and the same ideas seem to recur time and time again. Learn how to get the most out of everyone, taking into account different collaboration styles.

Visioning tools

THNK’s human-centered design approach for generating innovative solutions to real business challenges has four steps: sensing, visioning, prototyping and scaling. This session will focus on visioning and the methods for sideways thinking and idea generation, including questioning assumptions, reframing impediments as opportunities and the power of futuring in developing highly original, creative solutions.

What past participants say about this program:

“This a workshop all leaders should experience to elevate their team’s ability to be innovated and be effective in product design strategies and solutions.”

“I can’t believe how much I learned during this workshop! While learning about different techniques to facilitate design sessions was very valuable, the learning about how to facilitate will help me in all my meetings.”

Who is this program intended for?

  • Mid- to senior-level creative/user experience/product design leaders from corporates, startups, government, academic institutions

  • Independent consultants tasked with managing or

  • Anyone who must lead teams through creative problem-solving.

What is the format for the day?

We believe in interactive, practice-based learning over theory. In this learning environment, participants practice new skills on real-life topics and challenges coached by facilitation, leadership, and innovation practitioners.

We’ll use individual reflection, pairs discussion, and group exploration to keep energy high, including time for coffee and lunch. The day will run from 8:30 AM—5:30 PM.

Where will this experience take place?

This event will be hosted at The Home, an extraordinary space designed from the ground-up to foster big picture thinking and renew creativity.

Who will facilitate?

THNK Vancouver's Elaine Broe

A Founding Member of THNK's Master Faculty, Elaine is the Lead of the Quest portion of THNK's Creative Leadership Program. She believes we rely too often on hiring someone to come in and fix things. We need to break the habit of looking to an expert for inspiration and answers. With 18 years of experience in the adult education sector, Elaine has learned that genius is already in the room. People may need guidance, great questions, and creative ways to break patterns – but a group of committed individuals will create powerful solutions. That’s the type of work she lives for.

Elaine designs and facilitates experiences that encourage exploration, challenge assumptions, and share collective wisdom. One thing that is guaranteed is you’ll be on your feet at some point and laughing. She holds a Master’s degree in Leadership with a focus on employee creativity and change within an organizational culture.

Elaine enjoys breaking ground on new work and challenges by being in the conversation of what is possible. Her areas of interest include: presentation and facilitation skills, coaching, teambuilding, communication, creative design and strategic planning.

Blueprint UX's Anthony Hempell

Blueprint UX helps businesses understand their customers, simplify complex business problems, and make digital products and services easier for everyone to use. The Blueprint UX team is stacked with senior UX consultants with deep knowledge of user experience, strategy, research, design, testing, and the kind of mentorship to shape extraordinarily relevant and useful customer experiences.

Anthony is Blueprint’s Managing Director and Senior UX consultant. He formed Blueprint UX in 2015 to create an environment for Vancouver’s best user experience professionals to work together and increase their opportunities for professional connection, collaboration and growth. Leading for UX is the first of many workshops he is planning to bring to Vancouver's UX community to help strengthen its potential for leadership and innovation in the digital industry.

Previous to starting Blueprint, Anthony was Managing Director of the Vancouver office of UXGuys, Western Canada’s largest UX consultancy. Before joining UXGuys, he alternated between working and leading teams at web agencies (Blast Radius, Columbus Group) and working as an independent consultant. Along the way he has been responsible for the user experience of hundreds of public and private sector digital projects for organizations like MEC, Starbucks, VISA, DirecTV, Best Buy Canada, Translink, BC Hydro, UBC, Langara College, University of Alberta and the Legal Services Society of BC.

Anthony is also a part-time instructor at Capilano University's IDEA School of Design.

What should we prepare or expect?
